60’s fashion actually included several fashion trends. The were certain elements of 60’s fashion that endured the entire decade some 60’s fashions were short lived and others that started up later and rolled over into the 70’s. Some of the most noteworthy aspects of 60’s fashion were the things that England introduced and really took off world wide. The 60’s were about Mod. There were mini skirts, and go go boots. 60’s London fashion gave us pop music, Beatles haircuts, the blending of gender, paper dresses and all kinds of bold changes that were marketed to young people who were experiencing a new freedom in society that bucked the system.

60’s fashion was also about hippies. Young people were against current political views. They were searching for answers and many went looking for them in India. This resulted in a 60’s fashion trend that was all about the hippie experience. Clothing and styles discovered there were brought back and later imported in huge mass quantities and all the hippies were dressing in these wonderful hand printed Indian clothes that were soon a distinctive look of 60’s fashion. Many “old hippies” today still wear their 60’s fashion clothing of Indian imports in comfort and with nostalgic joy.

60’s fashion also included items like bellbottom pants, platform shoes, tie dyed shirts and pantyhose. 60’s fashion also included a movement toward going without a bra, and in some cases having ceremonial bra burnings. for the most part, the fashions in the 60’s were all about breaking free and expressing yourself.

Fashion is also about language and behavior and in 60’s fashion, the expressions of the day were things like, “Groovy”, ‘Far out”, “Crash”, meaning going to sleep, “What’s your bag?” meaning what is your problem? or something was “Bad”, when that really meant good.

And who can forget one of the most phenomenal events of the 60’s which was also about fashion as fashion includes current behavior. Woodstock in the summer of ‘69 was the ultimate music festival of our time. The 60’s fashion expressed at Woodstock was hippiedom, free love, drugs, peace and music. And some of the msuic of the 60’s has bee more enduring than music from any other era. 60’s fashion in every area is memorable and distinct. Those of us who lived it, won’t ever forget it.
