Bars are used in some types of piercings like that of the tongue. Ring jewelry is measured by diameter and is used in various types of piercings. Gauge indicates the thickness of the jewelry. Piercings are performed with needles or guns perforating the skin.
After-care during the healing period of the piercing is the most important aspect of body piercing. The healing period is the time when epithelial cells grow around the pierced location. There are several ways to prevent infection after getting pierced. Ones should rinse the pierced skin with warm water and should keep it away from saliva and sweat. One should not swim in hot baths or swim in public pools in the healing period. And most importantly, one should have food rich in vitamins and proteins to help the pierced portion heal faster.
