The ear piercing is the most commonly practiced body piercing. The common sites for ear piercing are the earlobe or the ear cartilage portion of the external ears. One or more holes are created in the cartilage piercing for wearing the earrings. The holes are temporary or permanent. The cartilage piercing is popularly known as the conch piercing.
The cartilage piercing includes the inner cartilage piercing or outer cartilage piercing. The jewelry used for the cartilage piercing involves the captive bead rings, circular barbells and barbells. The jewelry is usually made from the non-toxic metals like surgical steel, gold, niobium and titanium. These metals are tolerable by the body and there is less possibility of rejection. The jewelry should be sterilized. If a bar is used for the cartilage piercing, it should be longer as the piercing gets swollen.
The cartilage piercing has numerous layers of various types of tissue. They take different time for complete healing. The process of piercing separates the skin layers from the cartilage layer. Some of the cartilage piercings swell during healing. Some piercers perform the cartilage piercing using the needle one size larger than that of the selected jewelry. It allows the room for new tissues inside the piercing.
As the cartilage is composed of several layers, its piercing is difficult to heal. It takes about 1 month to feel well and about 4 months for healing. The complete healing requires about 6 months to one year. The cartilage piercing has more tendency of scarring due to the nature of tissues involved. The piercing should be done perpendicular to the tissue to decrease the stress on the tissue.
If you develop the symptoms like yellowish or greenish pus, foul odor of pus, redness, pain, warm in touch and swelling, then they indicate the infection to the piercing site. It should be immediately treated.
The aftercare is very important in case of cartilage piercing. It should be cleaned twice a day using the antibacterial soap. Don’t use the salts or antibiotics ointments for the piercing. Don’t apply the sun tan lotion, baby oil, tea tree oil or other skin products on the healing piercing.
