Children’s fashion wouldn’t really exist if it were not for the obsession that adults have with fashion. A couple of generations back, children’s clothing, aside from one special “Church going outfit” was very utilitarian and not very interesting. Children’s fashion was a concept that would have been sneered at by anyone outside of royalty or the most privileged among us.
Children’s fashion was basically, play clothes and school clothes and, like I mentioned, one Sunday go to meetin’ outfit or party dress. And in children’s fashion, there were your good shoes and your everyday shoes. When the advent of television and commercials invaded the world, children’s fashion started to become more present and then, gradually, more important to the point that now, children’s fashion is out of hand. The marketing that is targeted at children to push children’s fashion is tremendous. But even before children are influenced by what the see on TV regarding children’s fashion, babies are dressed to the hilt.
Babies own and wear complete wardrobes of designer clothing, from designer tee shirts and receiving blankets to designer sleep wear and outerwear. How crazy is that for children’s fashion. A baby can wear some articles of clothing for a few weeks and then outgrow it. Spending sometimes, hundreds of dollars on a single outfit for children’s fashion that is worn maybe two or three times is out of whack.
And very young school children are into children’s fashion. By the time some children are in Kindergarden, they are aware of children’s fashion and are even pressuring their parents, if the parents haven’t already bought into children’s fashion, for certain fashion items. These children’s fashion items might be special sneakers or backpacks or baseball caps or designer jeans, but they are often very aware of the current children’s fashion trends and are embarrassed if they are not able to fit in by owning and wearing the “right” children’s fashion clothing.
As Children get a little bit older, children’s fashion begins to take on even more importance. By the time kids reach their pre-teens, they have very distinct preferences in terms of children’s fashion with regard to their clothing, their accessories and their hair. A child’s social life and experience in school can be drastically effected by how well or how poorly he or she sizes up in terms of children’s fashion. this is a very sad state of affairs that a young person should be so affected by such a thing as children’s fashion.
