Dangers of body piercing include viral and bacterial infections, skin allergies, scarring, nerve damage, keloids and excessive bleeding.

The most common piercing site is the ear. The ear piercing involves the piercing of the cartilage. The wound created due to cartilage piercing is difficult to clean and takes more time to get healed completely. It is more susceptible to infection. The infection of lips or mouth can cause swallowing, speaking or chewing problems. The throat may be blocked due to swelling. The infection of nipple can cause scarring of the breast tissue and limits the ability of breast-feeding. The navel infection can spread into uterus in case of women. The piercing infections can affect the entire body and may be life-threatening.

There may be tearing or splitting of the skin leading to the formation of scar tissue. Some persons may develop the allergic reactions due the piercing jewelry. If the jewelry is made from nickel or brass, it can cause the skin allergies. Hence, the piercing jewelry should be made from the non-toxic metals like surgical steel, titanium, niobium, platinum and 14/18 carat gold.

The jewelry can cause other problems. The jewelry in the lips or mouth can cause the gum problems, cracking of the teeth and difficulty in swallowing or chewing. The jewelry in the navel can get caught in the clothing and causes the irritation. It delays the healing process. The jewelry in the genital area can cause an injury to you or your partner.

There may be damage to the underlying nerves or blood vessels. There may be scarring of the piercing site. If proper sterilization is not applied, there is a possibility of transmission of life-threatening diseases like Hepatitis B or C, HIV, tetanus, tuberculosis and syphilis.

If the piercing is not placed carefully, it can cause damage to the nerves. If during piercing procedure, the vein is hit, then there is risk of excessive bleeding.
