About dermabrasion:
The process of dermabrasion, or surgical skin planning, is a procedure in which the skin is frozen and then a specialized instrument is used to sand the skin. This abrasive or planning action improves skin contour as a new layer of skin replaces the treated skin. The new skin generally has a smoother appearance. A dermatologist surgeon performs the procedure. Initially, when dermabrasion was first developed its scope of treatment was limited only for the removal of acne scars pox marks and other scars resulting from accidents. Today with the modification of the treatment procedure and the introduction of microdermabrasion and is used to treat almost any type of skin condition including stretch marks, tattoo scars, age spots, wrinkles and many other type scars.
How does it works:
Prior to the derma abrasion the surgeon describes the type of anesthesia to be used the procedure and the results that might be realistically expected. The possible risks and complications that might occur during the treatment procedure are also made clear prior to the administration of the dermabrasion. Also the post and the pre operative measures and instruction are given to the patients. The process of dermabrasion is generally performed in the dermatologist’s surgeon’s clinic or at any outpatient surgical facility. To avoid excessive stress or anxiety prior to the surgery medication to relax the patients is sometimes administered. The first phase of the treatment procedure generally begins with the thorough cleansing of the affected region with an antiseptic cleansing agent and then it is followed by the application of a special type spray that freezes the skin. Then a high-speed rotary instrument with an abrasive wheel or brush is employed to remove the outer layer of the skin and improve any irregularities in the surface of the skin.
Side effects and precaution after dermabrasion:
Although side effects are very rare in dermabrasion but some of the dermatologists claim that it can show in some cases depending upon the type and genre of the skin of the patient. Usually some common complications like temporary uneven changes in the skin color and darkening of the skin, formation of a scar or infections may appear after the treatment. It is advised not to take alcohol within 48 hours after the surgery. Intake of aspirin or any products that contain aspirin or ibuprofen for at least one week should also be strictly avoided.
