Dermal Punching Method

The needle method, piercing guns, Cannula method, Scalpel method, pierce and taper method and the dermal punching method are all methods of body piercing.

Dermal punches are designed to remove tissues for biopsy procedures. It is a body modification procedure through which larger pieces of flesh can be removed than piercing small holes. It acts as a punching machine to punch holes and remove large sections of skin. The dermal punch method involves much more blood shedding than the other procedures. But some people claim that this method is quite painless as compared to the other methods of piercing. For others, it remains to be the most painful method. It can be a traumatic procedure for the skin but is preferred over tapering for cartilage piercing. Cartilage which lacks blood flow and is vulnerable can actually be damaged by the painful stretching procedure of tapering. Dermal punch does not damage the cartilage.

Dermal punch can be used for several layers of skin and can be used for removing several gauges at once. It is a round needle and looks like a sharp, round cookie-cutter for piercing the skin. Before doing a cartilage dermal punch, a small flashlight is placed behind the area to be pierced for illuminating and highlighting the major blood vessels in that area. This is done from the front as well as the back side of the area to be pierced. This helps to avoid damage to the surrounding tissues. Larger dermal punch piercing is given a special treatment for healing. Jewellery or accessories can be worn through the pierced area for a few days to allow the tissue to seal, but can be removed later. It is extremely necessary to make sure that the piercing doesn’t close or contract. An advantage offered by dermal punch method of piercing is that the fistulas do not shrink or close on their own after the piercing.

Dermal punches are used to perform cartilage piercing, punch and taper surface piercing and nostril piercing. They are not widely used for other types of piercings as they remove a section of tissue which may limit the stretching of the piercing in the future.
