The ear piercing is the most widespread piercing among the all types of body piercing. It involves the piercing of the earlobes or the cartilage portion of the external ears. Earlobe piercing is the most popular among the women as well as men. The ears were the first body parts that were pierced when the piercing got started.

In some tribes, the idea behind the piercing is that the evil spirits enters the body through the ears and metals repulse these spirits. The earlobe piercing has a great historical background. The main purpose of earlobe piercing is to wear different types of jewelry.

Various techniques are used to pierce the earlobes. The home method involves application of an ice as a local anesthetic and puncturing the site with a sewing needle. The alcohol is rubbed on the site for disinfection. The semi-soft objects such as cork, rubber eraser or potato are used as a push point. The sewing thread can be drawn through the piercing. It helps to keep the piercing open during the healing period. A gold stud or a wire earring can be directly inserted into the piercing as the initial jewelry.

Another method of earlobe piercing became popular in 1960s. It involves the use of sharp spring-loaded earrings called as trainers, self-piercers or sleepers. They are gradually pushed through the earlobe. The ear piercing instrument called as the ear piercing guns are also popular. An alternative method is use of a hollow piercing needle. Its technique is same as that of sewing needle technique. In tribal cultures, the piercing is performed using the instruments like the bone spurs.
