He wanted to imitate that odor in his perfume. He created a composition and called it eau de cologne. Thus eau de cologne was borne in 1709. From there onward the eau de colognes were available in the market. Due to different reasons the eau de cologne became very popular. Even the great Napoleon used eau de cologne as per historical records.
The cologne became a generic term. The funny part is that first and original eau de cologne can not be put in the category of the eau de cologne any more! It is obvious that the comparison of different brands and their prices will be a difficult thing to do. There can be more concentrate per ml of the given perfume and less total quantity in size.
