Healing Process Of Body Piercing

Piercing today is considered cool, trendy and stylish. Body piercing was practised in North America, South America, Africa, India, Aleutian Islands, Indonesia, Turkey, Bavaria and Egypt. Several parts of the body like the lips, cheeks, cartilage of the ear, eyebrow, tongue, septum and nose are pierced with several body piercing equipments like needles, Cannula method, scalpel method, piercing guns, pierce and taper method and dermal punching method. Piercing can be a painful process as sharp needles and objects are used which may damage our sensitive tissues and lead to a lot of blood shedding too. It is susceptible to infection during the healing period and several measures should be undertaken to avoid infection.

Several measures should be undertaken whilst the healing process of body piercing takes place. In case of ears, the pierced part should be washed with soap and isopropyl alcohol on both sides of the pierced area atleast twice or thrice a day. An antibiotic ointment or antiseptic cream can be used for the first two-three weeks. Only pure metal earrings should be worn as many people are allergic to the non-metallic earrings. Dangling earrings which have a possibility of getting caught somewhere shouldn’t be worn as they can tear the pierced earlobe. In case of tongue piercing, a good mouthwash should be used and alcohol, spicy food and hot liquids should be avoided atleast until the first two weeks. One should avoid biting on the piece of jewellery\stud while having food. Ice can be used to heal redness, soreness or burning of tongue. Clothes promoting moisture, building friction and heat should be avoided when a person has had a navel piercing. Navel piercing can take up to five months to heal.

Using good quality navel rings, jewellery and accessories is the best thing to do after piercing some body part. Piercing heals by forming epithelial cells along the inside of the piercing which takes 6 to 8 months to form. Warm water should be applied before rotating the jewellery as the epithelial tissue is sensitive and can break easily. During the healing period of piercing, jewellery should not be removed as there are chances of the piercing getting shrunk if jewellery is removed. Antiseptics, alcohol-based products and petroleum products should be avoided as far as possible. Warm water and pure saline can promote formation of a tough fistula in the healing period of the body piercing.
