Tongue Piercing

Tongue piercing has become popular in last few years. Like other body piercing, it doesn’t restrict the body movements due to its location. It is very distinct and can be worn during your indoor or outdoor routine work. The tongue piercing takes about 4 to 6 weeks for complete healing.

After tongue piercing, you will experience swelling and uncomfortable for 3 to 7 days. Cold drinks and ice will help to reduce the soreness and swelling. A longer piece of initial jewelry is recommended which is replaced by a shorter piece of jewelry after healing. The tongue piercing requires extreme care. Anything that enters in the mouth including smoke and food can cause the complications in tongue piercing. Hence, it is advised not to smoke and to rinse the mouth thoroughly using the antiseptic mouthwash. The alcohol-free mouthwash is recommended as alcohol irritates the piercing and slows the process of healing. The most important thing is that you should not play with the piercing during the healing. It will prevent the proper healing of the hole.

The tongue piercing is usually done with the straight barbell style jewelry. The tongue is involved in different actions and movements during eating, speech etc. Hence, it is very important that the jewelry size should be comfortable. Too thin barbells can cause migration that may lead to irritation and discomfort. The tongue piercing is stretchable and can accommodate the larger jewelry. The beads at the end of the barbell are made from many decorative materials such as plastic.

Tongue piercing is comparatively safe than other body piercing. The chances of bleeding and getting the bacterial infections are relatively less. However, if the vein is hit, there is a possibility of heavy bleeding. Hence, a qualified piercer should be preferred to avoid the damage to the blood vessels. Little bleeding is normal. But for uncontrolled bleeding, medical treatment should be taken. The tongue piercing can cause infections and breaking of teeth. There may be damage to teeth and gums due to improper placement of the jewelry. Brushing and use of mouthwash is very effective in healing the tongue piercing. Due to tongue’s natural healing ability, the piercing gets easily healed.
